--- Week 5 Notes below ---

Week 5 Notes:

Once again, Alabama proved too much for the competition, as the Crimson Tide easily dispatched with Florida, 31-6, to retain the #1 ranking with a perfect 5-0 record. It's expected that Alabama will roll through the remainder of the regular season unscathed, even though they are in the midst of their SEC schedule.

Alabama will have another tussle next week at South Carolina. The Gamecocks have had an extra week to prepare for the Tide to roll in, though that's hardly any consolation.

Further out for Alabama is LSU (November 6), which narrowly escaped an upset bid by Tennessee, 16-14. In truth, the Tigers don't look like the #11 team in the nation, but they are 5-0, so until they're upended, they get a favorable view. Better yet is Auburn, which has moved steadily up the rankings and now finds itself at #7 after thumping Louisiana-Monroe, 52-6.

Oklahoma proved to be marginally better than the Texas Longhorns, downing them, 28-20, in the Red River Rivalry. Consecutive losses by Texas have dropped them out of the Top 25.

Oregon looks like the real deal in the PAC-10 after roughing up Stanford, 52-31. The Ducks trailed that game 21-3 in the first quarter, but put on an offensive showcase for a national audience. At #6 in the rankings, they'll need a loss by either Nebraska (idle last week) or Ohio State (beat Illinois, 24-13) to get a shot at the national championship game, though they certainly seem a good fit.

Boise State and TCU rolled along with wins over weak conference foes, while Miami and Florida State emerged as the class of the ACC, thus far, though Virginia Tech, now 3-2 (2-0 conference) looms large and may be back in the Top 25 within weeks should they continue winning.

The Big East is once again absent. The best records in that division are 3-1, held jointly by west Virginia, South Florida and Syracuse. Yes, Syracuse.

The Big Ten is as competitive a conference as one would like. Michigan survived to 5-0 with a 42-35 win at Indiana, while Michigan State outplayed Wisconsin, 34-24, dropping the Badgers - a remarkably bad road team - down to #24. Michigan rose to #8, while the Spartans find themselves rounding out the Top 10, after Oklahoma.
