NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 7
Rick Gagliano | Through games of October 16, 2010
--- Week 7 Notes below ---
Ohio State ran into a buzz-saw in the form of the Wisconsin Badger defense and thus, another top team was taken down a notch in the quest for a national champion. Along with the Buckeyes, Nebraska and Nevada were tossed from the pool of unbeaten teams, leaving a nice round ten with unblemished records.
At the rate the major conferences are losing undefeated teams, the likelihood of either Boise state or TCU playing for the national championship increases proportionately. By mid-November they may be the only teams with a loss and the fact that playing in weaker conferences begins to work against them. What works for them is the success of the teams outside their conferences that they have beaten, most prominently, Oregon State - whom they both have played - and Virginia Tech, beaten by Boise in week 1.
The initial BCS rankings were released this week, and to everyone's surprise, Oklahoma found themselves on top.
Other Top 25 teams taking losses over the weekend included South Carolina, which dropped a game it seemingly had won at Kentucky, 31-28, as the Wildcats score 14 4th quarter points.
Michigan remained out of the rankings for the second straight week as they lost a key home match-up to Iowa, 38-38. The Hawkeyes moved up five spots, from #19 to #14.
Missouri may be the surprise team of the season, now 6-0 after dumping Texas A&M, 30-9. As for Boise and TCU, they continued to roll over weak conference opponents. Oregon had the week off. Five teams with two losses are already included in this week's rankings: USC, Virginia Tech, Arkansas (loser to Auburn, 65-43, South Carolina and North Carolina, which has come around considerably following an off-season scandal that decimated them their first few weeks.
The lone representative from the Big East continued as West Virginia. Conference-USA still has no representation among the country's finest.
