--- Week 8 Notes below ---

Week 8 Notes:

Unlike the fatally-flawed BCS, the top five teams in the Downtown Magazine Top 25 did not witness the fall of a #1 three weeks running. After Alabama fell in week 6, Boise State and TCU moved up to occupy two of the top three spots, though we were a little sidetracked by Ohio State.

When the hopelessly-overrated Sooners were taken to task this past week by a powerhouse Missouri team, our top five didn't change at all. Boise and TCU remain undefeated and unbowed, despite the criticism that they play in weak conferences. Of course, the BCS will never give them their due, despite how many number ones they'll have to go through before finally crowning a national champion.

The biggest move of the week was Missouri, though we probably had them underrated for the first seven weeks. The Tigers possess one of the best defenses in the country, if not the best overall, though Wisconsin's also rates very high, along with an improving Auburn, and of course, Alabama.

Interestingly enough, those three teams occupy spots 5, 6 and 7 in our rankings, and it would be no surprise for any of them to come through the remainder of their schedule unscathed and actually make the national championship game a battle royal.

Should that occur, Downtown Magazine would have no issue with a Missouri-Oregon or Missouri-Auburn match-up, granted both teams are still unbeaten.

We are down to just seven undefeated teams in the college ranks, including one Michigan State team (#5), which came back to win over Northwestern on Saturday. The Spartans just may be the real deal, with a slick QB in Kirk Cousins and a defense that makes plays when needed most.

The number of unbeaten squads may fall to six or even five by the time November comes around, as the games to watch this coming week include Missouri at Nebraska and Michigan State at Iowa. Other potential upsets of unbeatens could occur when Utah plays at Air Force or Oregon travels to USC, though the Utes and Ducks appear to have the competition outflanked.
