--- Final Notes below ---

Looking for the best NFL Handicapper? Good luck. Most of them suck.

Final Notes:

What a horrible way to end a season, with the only undefeated team in the country completely humiliated before a national audience and shut out by an obviously better-prepared and highly motivated Alabama team.

The sad part is that as badly as LSU played there is the possibility that any of the top six or eight teams - Oklahoma State, Boise State, Arkansas, Oregon, Stanford - could probably have bean them.

Alabama's 21-0 victory was convincing of one thing, that their loss at home to LSU, by a 9-6 scores, was a fluke. The better team really showed up on Monday in the Superdome.

One wonders what the previously-unbeaten LSU team did in the month preceding the most important game of their season. QB Jordan Jefferson looked like he was on crack and should have been replaced, at the latest, by the middle of the third quarter, if not much, much sooner. And LSU's defense wasn't much better, because Alabama doesn't really have much of an offense, but LSU continually gave runners the edge, or the corner and the pass defense was deficient throughout.

It's still amazing that this LSU team won 13 straight games. My apologies to readers who followed my advice on picking the Tigers over the Crimson Tide. The game was a complete farce, but the decision was nearly the exact opposite of what was expected and Alabama earned my respect even though Boise or Oklahoma State would have produced a better game.

At least there are rumblings in college football about doing away with the 1 vs. 2 set-up for the national title. By next season a "plus-one" game, involving the winners of 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 match-ups might be instituted, which would be a welcome change.

Crimson Tide, national champions. I can certainly get on board with that. They earned it and they deserve it.

See you in September. Alabama, USC, West Virginia and Arkansas are my ultra-early top picks.
