Week 5 Notes:

It was a week of big changes in the Top 25 rankings as eight of the top 20 teams took losses over the weekend.

Though the top five - Stanford, LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma and Boise State - remained intact underneath was a cataclysm of catastrophe beginning with last week's #6 squad, South Carolina - wherein continued errors in the passing game led to a 44-17 defeat at Auburn - through #19 South Florida, which was handled easily at Pitt, 44-17, proving once again that winning on the road in college football is one of the most difficult tasks in team sports.

Wisconsin made the biggest statement of the weekend, routing Nebraska, 48-17, while fellow Big Ten squads, Michigan and Illinois took care of business. Michigan State made its way back into the top 25 with a XXX win over Ohio State.

Survivors in the lower tier were notably, Houston, 49-42 winners at UTEP, ACC teams Clemson - which took out previously unbeaten Virginia Tech, 23-3 - and Georgia Tech, which survived a scare at North Carolina State with 24 4th quarter points and a 45-35 win.

In the soon-to-be-extinct Big 12, which began the week with seven unbeaten teams, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech (still unranked), Texas and Kansas State survived, while Iowa State - beaten by Texas at home, 37-14 - and Baylor, 36-35 losers to Kansas State, suffered their initial losses.

Arkansas gave Texas A&M a taste of what to expect when the Aggies join the SEC in 2012 with a 42-38 whipping after A&M had led 35-17 at the half. It was the second straight second half collapse for the E&M defense; their second straight loss dropped them out of the Top 25.
TCU also fell out of the rankings, with their second loss of the season, a 40-33 overtime defeat at the hands of SMU.

In the top tier, #1 Stanford retained the top spot for the fifth consecutive week, hammering UCLA, 45-19. #2 LSU scrambled Kentucky, 35-7. #3 Alabama went on the road to defeat Florida handily, 38-10; #4 Oklahoma wiped out Ball State, 62-6; and, #5 Boise State avenged last season's loss at Nevada with a win on their home blue turf, 30-10.

Rounding out the top 10, Oklahoma State moved up from #7 to #6, while idle, Wisconsin, Oregon and Houston each jumped three notches to occupy this week's 7, 8 and 9 slots. Clemson leap-frooged fellow ACC entrant Georgia Tech, moving from #20 to #10. The Yellow Jackets took the #11 spot in the rankings.

USC joined fellow PAC-12 members Oregon and #20 Arizona State, at #23, after Matt Barkley set school records in a 48-41 win over Arizona.

West Virginia became the only Big East team in the Top 25, after South Florida's loss to Pitt on Thursday, hammering Bowling Green, 55-10.

The number of undefeated teams in the FBS dropped to just 15.
