Thursday, August 18

7:30 pm New England Patriots at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-2 1/2, 36 1/2) - Even without Tom Brady playing last week, the Patriots were able to completely dominate Jacksonville, winning, 47-12, piling up 476 yards of offense while allowing the Jags only 193 total yards. Seems that everything is going according to plan in Foxboro.

As for the Bucs, they too looked to be in mid-season form, routing the Chiefs, 25-0, and allowing only 137 yards of offense. Not only are the Buccaneers loaded with offensive talent, their defense is on the upswing as well and should be looking to make a statement at home against the highly-regarded Pats.

Tough call, but the Bucs, at home, are it.

Prediction: Buccaneers 17 Patriots 14

8:00 pm Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers (-3, 34) - The Steelers looked sluggish in their preseason opening loss to Washington, though it was probably due more to the Redskins being hungry than the Steelers being unmotivated. This week will see more starters getting more playing time, and the Eagles have a big talent edge on offense and in the secondary.

While the Steelers are a good team, the Eagles are absolutely loaded and, at times, will prove unstoppable. Even their subs are better than what Pittsburgh can put on the field.

Prediction: Eagles 21 Steelers 17

Friday, August 19

7:30 pm Washington Redskins (-5 1/2, 33 1/2) at Indianapolis Colts - While there's little doubt that the Colts are a vastly different - and less volatile - offense without Peyton Manning, those on the field will have to step up this week, especially because they're at home and need the fans to remain supportive.

After getting bombed, 33-10, by St. Louis, the Colts need to show some resolve against an inferior opponent. John Beck is supposed to get the starting call for the Redskins, and even though they are coming off a 16-7 win over the Steelers, they are not a playoff caliber team. This game is much more important for the Colts, so the points are your friends.

Prediction: Colts 20 Redskins 13

7:30 pm Kansas City Chiefs at Baltimore Ravens (6 1/2, 32) - Last week against the Buccaneers, Kansas City looked very ordinary, and, as the game wore on, pretty much outright bad, losing 25-0. Being shut out is demoralizing to an offense, so there surely was plenty of work done during the week in practice to sharpen up many of the players who will see significant action in Baltimore.

However, just because the Chiefs are likely to play better than they did in their preseason opener doesn't mean they're going to win, especially putting on the pads against the Ravens, who are a very physical and emotional team. Having lost to the Eagles last week, the Ravens will be seeking redemption, plus, they'll have had an additional day of work as opposed to the Chiefs, who played on Friday and have to travel.

Prediction: Ravens 20 Chiefs 10

Looking for the best NFL Handicapper? Good luck. Most of them suck.

7:30 pm Detroit Lions at Cleveland Browns (-2 1/2, 36) - This game has the makings of a truly enjoyable game to watch. The first units for both teams are looking to get more reps and improve their overall timing and congruity as offensive and defensive squads, and there's more than enough explosive talent to go around.

The Browns are sure to be feeling pretty good about themselves after having knocked off the Packers. 27-17, but the Lions are fueled up and ready for takeoff after their 34-3 rout of the Bengals.

The Browns get to stay home for the second straight week, so it will be interesting to note how well Matthew Stafford and his potent offense will work on the road.

Prediction: Browns 27 Lions 23

7:30 pm Carolina Panthers at Miami Dolphins (-6, 33) - Do the Dolphins really deserve to be a nearly one touchdown favorite over the Panthers? Sure their comeback, 28-23 win over the Falcons was nifty, but it was achieved against second and third stringers and many players who may not make the final cut.

Matt Moore will give Chad Henne a run for his money on the starting QB job, so expect both of them to see increased time. Facing Carolina is going to be a different story, as the Panthers are rebuilding in a hurry and may want to get #1 draft pick Cam Newton on the field for more action and reps.

That may pose a problem for the Dolphins, despite being at home. On top of that, Carolina players are probably just as accustomed to heat and humidity as Miami players, so no edge there.

Prediction: Panthers 17 Dolphins 16

8:00 pm Atlanta Falcons at Jacksonville Jaguars (-3, 35) - Following a less-than-inspired loss to Miami, the Falcons will be looking to fill in some holes, especially in the secondary, which should result in a major problem for the non-existent passing attack of the Jaguars, who were soundly trashed by New England in week one, 47-12.

Falcon starters actually played well against the Dolphins last week, scoring 17 points in the first quarter before pretty much calling it a day (or night, as the case may be) and turning the game over to substitutes. That may well happen again, but the Jaguars don't appear to be going anywhere fast this coming season, and they may encounter more problems defending and scoring against an Atlanta squad which has its eyes set on the Super Bowl.

Prediction: Falcons 31 Jaguars 17

8:00 Arizona Cardinals at Green Bay Packers (-6, 37) - Both teams are coming off surprising developments in the first week of preseason, with the Cardinals whipping the Raiders, 24-18, in Oakland and the Packers losing at Cleveland, 27-17.

The scenario for both teams looks to be radically different this week. The packers have no holes on defense and an offense that, when clicking, is nearly impossible to stop. Arizona is still searching for a running game, and, while their passing offense is improved with Kevin Kolb at the helm, the Packer defense isn't going to make things easy for him.

As the line indicates, this one could be a very one-sided affair in Titletown.

Prediction: Packers 27 Cardinals 13
