Sunday, Oct. 23

Houston Texans at Tennessee Titans (-3, 44 1/2) 1:00 pm - Houston started out the season like a house afire, but has lost two straight and three of their last four. Missing all pro wide receiver Andre Johnson is part of the problem, playing on the road, where the Texans have lost their last two, is another issue.

The AFC South division is up for grabs here, with Tennessee clinging to a 1/2 game lead as they come off their bye week with a 3-2 record. Houston has the offense the Titans wish they had, but the Texas defense must step up here and keep the sluggish Titan offense out of the end zone for the win.

Prediction: Texans 23 Titans 17

Seattle Seahawks at Cleveland Browns (-3, 41 1/2) 1:00 pm - On the surface, the Browns appear to be one of the bigger disappointments of the early season, but, like Seattle, they are 2-3, and are coming off two straight losses.

The Seahawks managed a huge, 36-25, win over the Giants and were rewarded with a bye last week, so they come into this game healthy and rested, though teams coming off byes this season have not fared well so far.

Cleveland fans would love a home win, and Colt McCoy is about ready for a breakout performance, and there aren't many teams worse in the secondary than Seattle, allowing 268.2 yards passing per game, 23rd in the league.

Prediction: Browns 27 Seahawks 14

Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions (-3, 47 1/2) 1:00 pm - The Lions are still smarting from last week's 25-19, home loss to San Francisco, their first taste of defeat this season, and hosting the Falcons, fresh off a divisional win over the Panthers, 31-17, is not going to be a picnic.

Detroit had trouble stopping San Francisco rushers and the Falcons will pound Michael Turner at them, opening up Matt Ryan's passing attack. Harry Douglas, Roddy White and the incomparable Tony Gonzalez give the Falcons one of the better possession passing games in the business, and should make the Lions a 5-2 team when this one is over.

Prediction: Falcons 30 Lions 24

--- Story continues below ---

Denver Broncos at Miami Dolphins (-1 1/2, 42 1/2) 1:00 pm - Poor Miami is still searching for a win after five tries, and they'll have to deal with an energized Denver offense with Tim Tebow running the show.

Miami has a massive edge in the head-to-head department, winning six of eight, dating back to 1998, but they are still 0-5 (Denver is 1-4) and 0-5 ATS their last five games and last five at home, though they are 5-1 SU in its last six against the Broncos.

With the change at QB for Denver, most of the offense stats can be chucked, but Tebow, who has a burning desire to win, should get the job done against the wide-open Miami defense.

Prediction: Broncos 23 Dolphins 17

San Diego Chargers (-2, 43 1/2) at NY Jets 1:00 pm - At 4-1, the Chargers are off to their best start in years, and the trip East should be ameliorated by the fact that they are coming off a bye after squeezing by Denver in a 29-24 road win two weeks back.

San Diego's only loss was at New England, which is no disgrace, as the Pats beat the Jets, too, on October 9, 30-21. New York has had trouble finding offense, though they got a little into the groove in last week's 24-6 win at Miami, though one of their TDs was a 100-yard interception return by Darelle Revis.

The Jets have not been the same dominating squad on defense as last season, though that may be attributed to too many three-and-outs by the offense. Too many edges for the Chargers here to not take them, despite their recent 1-6 ATS record against the Jets.

Prediction: Chargers 26 Jets 20

Chicago Bears (-1 1/2, 45) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (at London, England) 1:00 pm - 3-3 Chicago is probably a little better than their record may indicate, as their losses came against the Packers and at Detroit and New Orleans. Matt Forte has been bruising opposing defenses, 7th in the league with 527 yards on 99 carries and the Tampa defense has been generous, ranked 25th in yards pre game, at 390.5.

This should be an entertaining game as the teams appear fairly evenly matched, but, with Chicago needing a win badly to stay in the hunt for a wild card, Jay Cutler should enjoy solid protection, and, coupled with Forte's running, can bring back a win from London.

Prediction: Bears 28 Buccaneers 23

Washington Redskins at Carolina Panthers (-2 1/2, 43 1/2) 1:00 pm - Despite being 1-5, the Panthers are 4-2 ATS, having lost four close games before falling to the Falcons, 31-17, last week.

While Cam Newton has played inspired football for a rookie QB, the Redskins will start John Beck over Rex Grossman behind center, after Grossman tossed four picks against the Eagles last week.

Despite that horrific effort, the 'Skins defense performed admirably, shutting out the Eagles in the second half. Beck came on in a reliever's role and was solid, hitting eight of 15 passes for 117 yards and rushing for a score. Newton will be hard-pressed to penetrate the Redskin defense and Washington will continue to be the leader in the NFC East.

Prediction: Redskins 34 Panthers 19
