NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 14
Rick Gagliano | Through games of December 1, 2012
--- Week 14 Notes below ---
Alabama Wins SEC, will Play Notre Dame for National Championship
Getting the job done at the right time, the Alabama Crimson Tide earned a spot in the BCS National Championship game January 7, 2013 against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the nation's only eligible undefeated team. Ohio State finished the regular season 12-0, but was barred from post-season play due to NCAA violations.
Alabama outlasted a determined Georgia squad, 32-28, in Saturday's SEC Championship game, one of the most thrilling conference championships seen in some time. The Bulldogs had a chance at the win, but fell yards short on a pass from Aaron Murray as time expired.
Other BCS Bowl spots were earned by Kansas State, which whipped the Texas Longhorns, 42.24, to earn the Big 12 title outright, having defeated 10-2 Oklahoma earlier in the season. The Wildcats will face Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl on January 3.
The Sooners will play in the non-BCS Cotton Bowl, despite edging TCU, 24-17, in the regular season finale.
Florida State, a 21-15 winner over Georgia Tech in the ACC title game, will meet Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl on January 1st. The 12-1 Huskies won the Mid-Atlantic conference with a 44-37 victory over Kent State.
Louisville, after a 20-17 victory over Rutgers, came out on top of a four-way tie - with Syracuse, Cincinnati and Rutgers - to earn the Big East title and the automatic BCS bid. The Cardinals will face Florida, January 2, in the Sugar Bowl.
The Rose Bowl on January 1 matches up Stanford, from the PAC-12, with Wisconsin, winners of the Big Ten with a stunning, 70-31, victory over Nebraska in that conference championship game. Stanford defeated UCLA, 27-24, in the PAC-12 championship.
The SEC got short-shrifted in the BCS bowl selections, due to the nature of the process. South Carolina and LSU, both 10-2, will play in non-BCS bowls. The Gamecocks meet the Michigan Wolverines in the January 1 Outback Bowl, while LSU will fce Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on December 31.
