Week 2 Notes:

Arkansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin Week 2 Casualties

While there was no change among the top eight teams in the nation, the carnage began in earnest with #10 Arkansas, which fell victim to tiny Louisiana-Monroe, out of the Sun Belt conference, losing, 34-31, in overtime, to the utter dismay of the Razorback faithful, who have had more than their fair share of scandal, controversy, shame and decline over the past eight months.

Put Razorback football on the endangered species list. They host Alabama on Saturday.

Wisconsin, last week coming in at #9 in the Downtown Magazine rankings, was next to be dealt out of the Top 25 by virtue of a 10-7 defeat at Oregon State, a PAC-12 school of dubious credentials which nonetheless defended their home turf with distinction. The win was one of a handful of unexpected wins by PAC-12 schools, including Arizona State's 45-14 manhandling of Illinois, Arizona's 59-38 dismantling of Oklahoma State. and UCLA's 36-30 home win over Nebraska.

The shift in power by conference seems to be sliding strongly to the West. Oklahoma State was ranked #16 last week, but stumbled badly on the road against a quality opponent.

#15 Nebraska continued its path from the Big 12 to the Big Ten to embarrassment, though the Bruins of UCLA may be a bit better than anyone may have imagined.

With four teams making early exits from the rankings, their replacements in the Top 25 consisted of UCLA (16), Arizona (19), BYU (22) and Arizona State (25).

BYU joined Notre Dame as the only independents (a rare breed these days) to reach the Top 25 rankings, with two dominating wins: 30-6 last week against Washington State, and Saturday's 45-13 defeat of Weber State. The Cougar program is one which continues to churn out quality teams year in and year out.

West Virginia took over the #9 spot in the rankings, despite having the week off. #10 now belongs to 2-0 Clemson, after having no problem taking down Ball State by a 52-27 score. Among winning teams from the ACC, #12 Virginia Tech rolled over Austin Peay, 42-7 and #8 Florida State crushed Savannah State, 55-0. Wake Forest waits in the wings for the Seminoles next week. The Demon Deacons are 2-0 as well, after downing North Carolina, 28-27, on a late score.

#17 Michigan remains the only ranked team with a loss, that coming at the hands of Alabama (#3) in Week 1, though their Week 2, 31-25, victory over Air Force was none-too-convincing.

The PAC-12 was the story of the week, placing six teams in the Top 25: USC (1), Oregon (5), joined by the aforementioned UCLA, Arizona and Arizona State. Stanford remains in good standing at #20, after the Cardinal hammered Duke, 50-13.
