NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 3
Rick Gagliano | Through games of September 15, 2012
--- Week 3 Notes below ---
Week 3 Notes:
USC Stunned by Stanford; Crimson Tide Rises to #1
It didn't take long for college football to get really interesting as the USC Trojans, positioned at #1 in Downtown Magazine's Top 25 rankings, were whipped by their upstate rival, Stanford, 21-14, Saturday night.
The Trojans were held in check by a relentless Cardinal defense which limited Heisman-hopeful QB Matt Barkley to 20-41 completions, picking off a pair of errant throws. It was the fourth straight year that Stanford has beaten USC, throwing cold water on the Trojans' hopes for a national championship early in the season.
With #2 Oklahoma idle, Alabama leapfrogged the Sooners into the top spot with a powerful, 52-0, statement win over defenseless Arkansas, whose season has been shattered by scandal and now, two consecutive defeats.
LSU moved up a spot to #3 on the strength of their 3-0 record and a 63-14 trouncing of Idaho. Also gaining one position in the rankings were Oregon, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida State, West Virginia and Clemson, all winners over the weekend.
Texas rounded out the Top 10, followed by Notre Dame, after their 20-3 dismantling of Michigan State improved the Irish record to 3-0. The Irish host Michigan this Saturday in another huge test for both teams.
USC filed in at #12, the spot vacated by Virginia Tech, another team shocked over the weekend. The Hokies were thoroughly mauled at home by Pitt which entered the contest 0-2. Virginia Tech dropped completely out of the Top 25 after their 35-17 defeat.
The PAC-12 continues to be the most pleasant surprise in college football with five teams in the Top 25, second only to the SEC, which now has six teams in the mix, with Mississippi State entering at #25.
Rutgers gave the unappreciated Big East two entries. Along with #19 Louisville, the Scarlet Knights took over the #24 spot with their nifty, 23-13, win at heavily-favored South Florida Thursday night.
The most dangerous team comes from the ACC in the form of Florida State, which, in reality, could be ranked as high as #2 or #3. The Seminoles are 3-0, have given up only a field goal thus far in the season, that coming in their opener, a 69-3 win over Murray State. Florida State has since then recorded back-to-back shutouts, bombing Savannah State, 55-0, and this weekend crushing Wake Forest, 52-0.
Florida State hosts Clemson this coming Saturday (Sept. 22) in a Top 10, ACC showdown. The game will be aired in prime time, at 8:00 pm EDT.
