Week 4 Notes:
Top 10 Shakeup as Oklahoma, Clemson Fall
It was not totally unexpected that the Oklahoma Sooners would be beaten by Kansas State this past Saturday. Under head coach Bob Stoops, the Sooners have developed a reputation over the years for losing big games early in the season.
The fact that the Wildcats thumped the Sooners, 24-19, in Norman, came as a complete surprise to many, however. Oklahoma has been nearly unbeatable at home during Stoops' tenure. Since taking over in 1999, the Sooners under Stoops were 77-3 at the conclusion of the 2011 season. They were 42-1 since 2004, the lone loss coming last season, to Texas Tech, 41-38, on October 22, 2011.
The Sooners fell from the lofty #2 position all the way to #16 in the new Downtown Magazine Top 25 rankings. Kansas State leapfrogged from #22 to #13.
Dropping from #9 to #18 was Clemson, after losing a well-played contest at Florida State, 49-37. The Seminoles moved up a notch from #7 to #6.
Other teams from the Top 25 to take losses were UCLA, going from #14 to #24 as home losers to Oregon State, which, at just 2-0, with wins over the Bruins and, previously, Wisconsin, 10-7, on September 8, still have much to prove, checking in for the first time at #22.
Michigan and Arizona, #15 and #17 last week, respectively, fell completely out after suffering devastating losses. 3-1 Arizona was completely outplayed in every aspect of the game in a 49-0 loss at Oregon, now #3 behind Alabama and LSU. The Wolverines took their second loss of the young season, a 13-6 loss at Notre Dame. Michigan opened the season with 41-14 defeat at Alabama.
Along with Oregon State, 3-0 Baylor entered the rankings for the first time this season, at #25.
Top-ranked Alabama had little trouble defeating non-conference opponent, Florida Atlantic, 40-7, while #2 LSU slipped by Auburn, 12-10.
