Week 5 Notes:

Top 10 Remains Intact, Stanford, Michigan State, Baylor Dumped

For Week 5, all teams in the Top 10 either won handily or were idle and positions remained the same as in Week 4.

The top five teams all had relatively easy wins over lesser foes. #1 Alabama topped Mississippi, 33-14, #2 LSU defeated Towson, though the 38-22 score was hardly impressive. Oregon, at #3, won on the road at Washington State, 51-26, #4 South Carolina was also a road warrior, hammering the wildcats in Kentucky, 38-17, while fellow SEC powerhouse Georgia staggered past Tennessee, 51-44. Georgia plays at South Carolina this coming weekend, so some movement among the top five is guaranteed.

Florida State made the ACC proud with a 30-17 victory at South Florida, handing the Bulls their third loss of the season against just two wins.

A notable win was recorded by #7 West Virginia, winning a Big 12 struggle over Baylor, 70-63, which, at #25 in Week 4, dropped out of the rankings but may have more to say later in the season.

At #8, the Texas Longhorns prevailed at Oklahoma State, a tough place to play, by a 41-36 score. #9 Notre Dame was idle, but has an interesting home game with 4-1 Miami on October 6.

The remainder of October doesn't get any easier for the Irish, as they play Stanford, BYU and at Oklahoma in successive weeks.

#10 TCU stopped by SMU to hand the Mustangs a 24-16 defeat.

Stanford, which entered the week at #11 was a casualty at Washington, as the Huskies stifled the Cardinal offense in a 17-13 PAC-12 conference win. 3-1 Washington enters the rankings at #21, their only loss a 41-3 smack-down at LSU, but the Huskies may not be long for the rankings, having to play at Oregon this Saturday. Stanford fell all the way to #24, followed by 5-0 Northwestern, making its initial entry into the Top 25.

Michigan State fell just short in their home game against Ohio State, losing 17-16, and dropping from the #21 position out of the Top 25, leaving the Big Ten with just three schools ranked: #15 Ohio State, #18 Nebraska and #25 Northwestern.

Apologies to readers for the tardiness of this week's rankings and notes. The delay was largely the result of a heavy outside work load and a loathsome relationship with a decrepit Teutonic ice queen, a situation which has since found resolution.
