NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 8
Rick Gagliano | Through games of October 20, 2012
--- Week 8 Notes below ---
Week 8 Notes:
No Change in Top 10
All ten of the top-ranked teams from Week 7 were winners in Week 8, so no changes occurred in the rankings.
At #11, however, South Carolina lost for the second straight week on the road, being hammered at Florida, 44-11, after losing at LSU, 23-21, the prior week. The Gamecocks' descent from #3 in Week 6, has been swift, falling all the way to #18 in the current rankings.
Other ranked SEC teams that were successful in week 8 included #10 LSU, a 24-19 winner over Texas A&M, which came into the Top 25 at #24 last week and has now fallen out; Georgia moved up one notch from #13 to #12, coming from behind to down Kentucky, on the road, 29-24.
Top-ranked Alabama was also a road winner, with an impressive 44-13 thrashing of Tennessee, and Mississippi State remained one of 11 undefeated teams with a 45-3 destruction of overmatched Middle Tennessee State. Despite their stellar 7-0 record, the Bulldogs are ranked just 16th because the only SEC wins are over Auburn, Kentucky and Tennessee, a combined 0-14 in the conference. Mississippi State has upcoming consecutive dates at Alabama, home for Texas A&M, and at LSU.
The PAC-12 continues to place teams in the rankings, this week, Arizona State, despite losing to Oregon, 43-21, took the final spot on the list due to the small number of quality teams at the lower end.
#2 Oregon stayed right where they were in Week 7, as did #4 USC, beating Colorado mercilessly, 50-6. #15 Oregon State struggled at home to beat Utah, 21-7, but still moved up one notch. Stanford returned to the rankings at #22 with a convincing, 21-3, win at Cal.
#3 Notre Dame remained unbeaten at 7-0, topping BYU, 17-14. Kansas State remains the most impressive team in the rankings, at #6. Their 55-14 rout of West Virginia, was a road test worthy of a Heisman Trophy for QB Colin Klein, who accounted for seven Wildcat touchdowns.
Ohio State stayed at #7, coming from behind to beat Purdue, 29-22, without QB Braxton Miller, who was injured earlier in the proceedings.
Representing the ACC, #8 Clemson ripped Virginia Tech, 38-17, and #13 Florida State won at Miami, 33-20. Louisville, the top represenative of the Big East, stayed undefeated and at #9, slipping by South Florida, 27-25.
Just outside the Top 10, Oklahoma, now ranked #11, pounded visiting Kansas, 52-7.
