Thursday, October 18
9:00 pm Oregon (-9, 68 1/2) at Arizona State - No team has even come close to beating the Oregon Ducks, their average margin of victory this season of 32.3 has resulted in a 6-0 record and #2 ranking nationally.
Recent games against the Sun Devils indicate that the Ducks will likely dominate the proceedings Thursday night and improve to 7-0. Arizona State has rung up a 5-1 record and is 5-0-1 ATS, but that is a trend about to be broken.
The line is a little on the short end, considering the last three times Oregon has played at Sun Devil Stadium, they've won by 35, 34 and 11 points, though that last figure was also the most recent.
Prediction: Ducks 44 Sun Devils 30
8:00 pm Connecticut at Syracuse (-4, 43 1/2) - Something of a stinker for Friday night, as both teams have failed to live up to advance billing for 2012, with the Orange sporting a 2-4 record and UConn checking in at 3-4.
Dating back to 2004, Connecticut has dominated this series, winning six of eight, including the last four straight. The Huskies' pounding rushing attack and the continuing improvement of QB Chandler Whitmer should keep Orange defenders on their heels all night.
Two Husky losses have been by three points while Syracuse's only Big East win was a 1-point victory over Pittsburgh in the Carrier Dome, so it appears this game will go down to the wire.
Prediction: Huskies 23 Orange 20
12:00 pm Rutgers (-5, 41 1/2) at Temple - Solid match-up of a team which loves to run the ball (Temple) and a squad of defenders dead set to stuff the run (Rutgers).
The Scarlet Knights are allowing just 60.8 yards per outing, second-best nationally behind Alabama.
Temple averages 176.8 yards rushing per game and will challenge Rutgers up front. The Owls are just 3-2, but have won their last two games and covered the line, both games against Big East foes, South Florida and UConn.
Prediction: Owls 21 Scarlet Knights 19
The Aggies, new to the SEC, have put up a 5-1 record, losing to Florida, 20-17 in their season opener, but defeating Arkansas and Mississippi for a 2-1 conference mark. while Texas A&M blistered non-conference opponents and Arkansas, winning by huge margins, their past two wins - over Mississippi and Lousiana Tech - have come by just three and two points, respectively.
The Tigers are roaring right now and being on the road poses a bit of an issue, as LSU has failed to cover both times on the road this season, but should prevail and make a mockery of this short line.
Prediction: Tigers 31 Aggies 13
Clemson has owned the Hokies recently, beating them twice last season, 23-3 at Virginia Tech and 38-10 in the ACC championship game.
Clemson QB Tajh Boyd has led the Tigers to a 5-1 record and the current form of the Hokies suggests this game may not be close.
Prediction: Tigers 41 Hokies 24
The Buckeyes, averaging 263.6 yards per game on the ground, should be able to pound away at will against a Purdue defense allowing 198.7 yards rushing per contest.
Purdue stunned the Buckeyes, 26-23, last season, but the last time these two played at the Horseshoe, in 2010, Ohio State engineered a 49-0 win
Prediction: Buckeyes 38 Boilermakers 13
Cal holds a 7-3 edge in the last 10 meetings of this annual contest, including four of the past five at home, despite a 2010, 48-14 beating at the hands of one Andrew Luck.
Stanford is a bit offensively-challenged this season as compared to their recent past, and generally struggles when playing at Berkeley, but should be able to hold down the Golden Bears, especially on the ground. Turnovers may tell the story in what looks to be a tight one.
Prediction: Cardinal 26 Golden Bears 21
