Bye: Atlanta, Denver, Kansas City, Miami, Philadelphia, San Diego

Thursday, October 18

Seattle at San Francisco (-7, 37 1/2) 8:20 pm - OK, so the 49ers weren't up to speed, even at home, against the mighty NY Giants. After all, the Giants are still the champs, and until dethroned sometime in January - if that even happens - they're still the team to beat, so no real knocks against San Fran. They had an off day, especially QB Alex Smith, who tossed three INTs.

Seattle, on the other hand, is possibly the most surprising team of the year, having already beaten Green Bay on the controversial last play of the last game in which replacement refs were employed, last week they went out and kicked New England, coming back from a 23-10 deficit for a 24-23 victory over the best offensive team (31.3 ppg) in the league.

Give Seattle its props, but the 49ers will deliver an angry whallop at home.

Prediction: 49ers 27 Seahawks 17

Sunday, October 21

Washington at NY Giants (-6 1/2, 50) 1:00 pm - Robert Griffin III is rewriting the history books for NFL rookie QBs, but the Giants are simply rewriting NFL history, as eli Manning gets it done against any and all comers.

While the Giants are playing at a high level, having dusted the 49ers last week, 26-3, take nothing away from Washington and its 3-3 record, meaning that, if the Redskins win this game, they'll tie the Giants for first place in the NFC East, which is really something for which to play.

The Giants will probably win this one, as they are 6-3 SU in their last eight home games against Washington, but just 2-3-1 ATS in their last six against the Redskins. Washington's losses have been by 7, 7 and 3 points, so expect them to hang in until the final gun.

Prediction: Giants 30 Redskins 26

Arizona at Minnesota (-6 1/2, 40) 1:00 pm - Both teams are coming off losses, but the Cardinals are exiting a pair of games they'd rather not think about: a 17-3 defeat at St. Louis and an unexpected home loss to the Bills, 19-16, last Sunday, after starting 4-0.

Minnesota ran into RG3 and the Washington Redskins, losing on the road, 38-26.

A number of trends show no plausible play here except to possibly take the points. Minnesota is 2-4 ATS in its last 6 games when playing Arizona and the Cardinals are 2-5 their last seven in Minnesota.

John Skelton, who came in for an injured Kevin Kolb in the second half of the Buffalo loss, gets the start, as Kolb has been ruled out indefinitely with a chest injury. A suitable replacement, Skelton won't make mistakes and will try to get the Arizona offense into a more balanced mode.

Prediction: Cardinals 21 Vikings 20

Dallas (-2, 45 1/2) at Carolina 1:00 pm - Dallas suffered its most embarrassing loss of the season last Sunday at Baltimore, when Dez Bryant dropped a potentially-game-tying 2-point try and then Dan Bailey missed a winning field goal moments later, sending the Cowboys to a 2-3 record with the 31-29 loss.

Recovering from tough losses is a way of life in the NFL, but the Cowboys are making a bad habit of the practice, though they may get a break playing at Carolina, and lo, and behold, they are 2-point favorites.

Dallas has won eight of the last nine against the Panthers, and have covered the spread in three of the last four meetings, two of them at Carolina, which is off to a 1-4 start. Looks like an easy spot for Dallas and a win is paramount if they plan on reaching the playoffs.

Prediction: Cowboys 24 Panthers 16

New Orleans (-3, 50) at Tampa Bay 1:00 pm - Would anyone have guessed that the Saints would be 1-4 and in last place in the NFC South at this point?

Probably not, but that's a fact, and the Saints need to start winning or they can seriously kiss the rest of this season goodbye.

Fortunately, they are playing better, finally getting a win over the Chargers, and they are catching the Bucs after a win, something that doesn't happen very often in 2-3 Tampa. On paper, the Saints win this going away. Should be the same way on grass.

Prediction: Saints 35 Buccaneers 21

Green Bay (-6, 44 1/2) at St. Louis 1:00 pm
- One of just three road favorites on the board this week, the Packers are certainly entitle to elite status after bombing Houston on the road last week, 42-24.

At 3-3, the Rams are holding their own, but their wins have come against Washington, Seattle and Arizona, not exactly the best teams in the league, but not chicken scratch either. The Packers are another story, however, even though a Green Bay win will buck a couple of trends: GB is 1-4 their last five road games, while the Rams are 4-0-1 their last five home games.

Trends are often broken, and the Packers are the kind of team to break these.

Prediction: Packers 34 Rams 21
