Week 6 Notes:

Few Changes After Close Calls in Week 6

Three games were contested in Week 6 pairing off teams within the Top 25.

Two of those games were so close - Ohio State over Northwestern, Stanford over Washington - and resulted in the higher-ranked team winning, that the lower-ranked teams (Northwestern and Washington) only dropped a few spots, while the other game - Florida State's 63-0 mauling of Maryland dropped the Terrapins out of the rankings. They were only #25 last week and are replaced this week by 5-0 Missouri.

The Buckeyes held onto and extended the nation's longest winning streak to 18 straight with a 30-20 victory over Northwestern, in a game that was much, much closer than the score would indicate, the Buckeyes scoring a touchdown on the final play of the game, as the Wildcats - to the great dismay of the bettors who had Northwestern +7 - foolishly tried to lateral the ball inside its own 10-yard line, fumbled into the end zone where jubilant Ohio state players covered the ball and celebrated the win.

#6 Stanford scored on the opening kickoff and led the rest of the game, despite the Huskies pulling to within three points on three separate occasions, including the final score of the game - a touchdown with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Accordingly, the Huskies were moved down from #16 to #20; the Wildcats reduced from #13 to 17.

In another important SEC contest, #11 Georgia came within a whisker of being upset by unranked Tennessee, the Bulldogs losing various key offensive players to injury during the course of the game. George tied the score at 31-all with just seconds left in regulation and won it with a field goal in overtime after Tennessee fumbled through the end zone on their OT possession.

Other games were largely blowouts. Alabama ripped Georgia State, 45-3, Clemson handled Syracuse, 49-14, Oregon roughed up Colorado, 57-16 and Baylor outscored West Virginia, 73-42, in the 4th-highest score in NCAA history.
