Thursday, September 12

7:30 pm Troy at Arkansas State (-7 1/2, 66 1/2) - A meaningful game in the Sun Belt featuring two of the perennial powerhouses of the conference.

Troy has advantages in their passing attack and stout run defense, allowing just 64 yards per game in back-to-back wins over UAB (34-31) and Savannah State (66-3). That should work well for them against the Red Wolves, who average 329.5 yards rushing per contest.

Arkansas State pounded Arkansas Pine-Bluff in their opener, 62-11, but were humbled at Auburn, a 38-9 loser. Something has to give and it won't be the Troy defense, which should carry the day and produce a Thursday night upset.

Prediction: Trojans 31 Red Wolves 20

7:30 pm TCU (-3, 62 1/2) at Texas Tech - The Horned Frogs are three-point favorites on the road against the Red Raiders and with good reason, after holding their own in their season opening loss to LSU, 37-27, though the game was at home, followed up by a solid, 38-17 win over SE Louisiana.

Texas Tech is 2-0 after winning, 41-23, at SMU and 61-13 against Stephen F. Austin and are loaded with offensive weapons the Horned Frogs will find difficult to defense.

Neither team has had much success ATS, with Tech 2-6 their last eight and TCU 1-5 their last six, but the home players get the nod here, ever so slightly, the three points may be needed.

Prediction: Red Raiders 41 Horned Frogs 40

8:00 pm Air Force at Boise State (-23 1/2, 57 1/2) - This is a pretty big deal for the Falcons, who already have a loss in the conference - 52-20 last week to Utah State - and traveling to the blue turf of Bronco Stadium isn't going to be a picnic.

Two years ago, the Falcons came to Boise and took a 37-26 loss, but both teams have regressed since then. Boise State simply doesn't have the same talent as during their excellent run over the past decade or so, and this line reeks of overconfidence in a shaky favorite, one which already has a loss on their sheet, a 38-6 thrashing in their opener at Washington.

Boise State may be good enough to win this one, but probably not good enough to cover an enormous line which could get higher by game time.

Prediction: Broncos 34 Falcons 23

Saturday, September 14

12:00 pm Louisville (-13, 59 1/2) at Kentucky - This is a must-win for the Cardinals if they hope to have any chance at playing for the national championship and will be their first game against a "real" opponent, much unlike their first two games, a 49-7 win over Ohio and 44-7 over Eastern Kentucky.

The Wildcats have an up-and-coming program and a new head coach in Mark Stoops, who has a load of defensive experience, plus the game will be played on enemy turf for the Cardinals, adding to their predicament.

The Cardinals know they have to win and hopefully win big, but Kentucky is not about to be pushed around in a key state rivalry game. Louisville has won the last two, but Kentucky won four straight prior to that.

Don't make the mistake of just putting a "W" in Louisville column just yet; the Wildcats are waiting to pounce.

Prediction: Wildcats 34 Cardinals 27

12:00 pm Virginia Tech (-7 1/2, 51 1/2) at East Carolina - Sure, East Carolina is 2-0 and V-Tech is 1-1, but that loss was to Alabama, 35-10, in their opener, and they since bounced back for a 45-3 rout of West Carolina. Alabama is a pretty good football team, so you can't take anything away from the Hokies for losing that one.

The Pirates have had issues holding down the score against Old Dominion and Florida Atlanta, both of whom they beat, but ODU scored 38 points on them and that's not a good sign.

Virginia Tech holds a 7-1 edge in the series and has won the last three straight. No surprise here; the Hokies will win convincingly.

Prediction: Hokies 35 Pirates 13

12:00 pm UCLA at Nebraska (-4 1/2, 70) - The Bruins had last week off after a season-opening 58-20 blowout of Nevada. Meanwhile, the Cornhuskers were shredding Southern Miss, 56-13, though their naarow, 37-34 win over a determined Wyoming squad is troublesome.

This shapes up as an offensive showcase with matador defenses on both sides, but if anyone can mount a stand, it would be UCLA, which comes up with big plays on D from time to time.

These two played just about a year ago, and the Bruins took a 36-30 win at home. If history repeats, it will have to be on the road, but the Bruins look like serious contenders in the PAC-10. A Rose Bowl preview. Well, maybe.

Prediction: Bruins 38 Cornhuskers 36
