Thursday, October 16

7:30 pm Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh (-1 1/2, 45) - Important ACC game as both squads are 1-1 in conference play, chasing 2-0 Virginia in the Coastal division.

Tech's two losses were close calls - by seven to East Carolina and by three to Georgia Tech. The Hokies are winners of their last two games.

On the other hand, Pitt has lost three straight and has scored only 49 points in those contests. Look for the Hokie defense to keep them bottled up.

Prediction: Hokies 28 Panthers 17

10:00 pm Utah (-2 1/2, 53 1/2) at Oregon State - While the Utes got a boost from their 30-28 win over UCLA in week six, the Beavers may have been flying under the radar, racking up a 4-1 mark, their only loss a 35-10 defeat at USC.

Balanced on offense, the Beavers will need to gnaw down on Utah's offense, which averages 39.6 ppg, though much of that was earned against Fresno state and Idaho State, two blowout wins for the Utes.

Prediction: Beavers 30 Utes 27

Friday, October 17

8:00 pm Fresno State at Boise State (-17, 61 1/2) - Big game in the Mountain West, both teams sporting 2-1 conference marks, but the big edge given to Boise on its blue home turf.

The Broncos are hardly the team that garnered so much attention over the past 10 years, and Fresno topped them last season, 41-40. The Bulldogs have a 3-4 mark, but it masks their first three games, which were all losses to high-quality opposition - USC, Utah and Nebraska.

Bulldogs are poised to spring the upset.

Prediction: Bulldogs 38 Broncos 31

9:00 pm Temple at Houston (-8, 50) - Owls are 4-1, but a sizable underdog at Houston, despite a 2-0 mark on the road with convincing wins over Vanderbilt and UConn.

This just seems wrong, but two of Houston's three losses were to pretty good teams, BYU and UCF, and they were not embarrassed.

Prediction: Cougars 34 Owls 24

Saturday, October 18

12:00 pm Iowa at Maryland (-5, 51 1/2) - Iowa may be the best 5-1 team that nobody's seen, but the Terps are seeking respect in the Big Ten after being blown away by the Buckeyes, last week, 52-24.

Look for the Terrapins to rebound and do it with a combination of stiff defense and superior play-calling on offense. Iowa's offense leaves much to be desired.

Prediction: Terrapins 31 Hawkeyes 13

--- Story continues below ---

12:00 pm Kansas State at Oklahoma (-8, 58) - The Wildcats have done nothing wrong, amassing a 4-1 mark, but those wins were against sub-par opposition.

The Sooners are 5-1, their lone lass a 37-33 defeat at TCU, but they rebounded with a 31-26 win over Texas last week and the defense should rise to the occasion here.

Prediction: Sooners 31 Wildcats 20

12:00 pm Baylor (-8, 79 1/2) at West Virginia - The Mountaineers are averaging 36.7 points per game this season, but that pales in comparison to Baylor, the #1 scoring offense in the nation, clicking at 52.7 ppg.

Lights out in Morgantown.

Prediction: Bears 52 Mountaineers 31

12:30 pm Virginia at Duke (-2 1/2, 50 1/2) - While the Cavaliers are 2-0 in the ACC, Duke asserted itself last week in a 31-25 victory at Georgia Tech and now has prepared a homecoming treat for the fans.

Virginia's two conference wins were narrow one over Louisville (23-21) and Pitt (24-19). This one is different.

Prediction: Blue Devils 26 Cavaliers 20
