Thursday, August 28

Atlanta at Jacksonville (-4, 39 1/2) 6:00 pm - Since there will be few starters in week four of the preseason, and only desperate folks will even watch these games, trends could be important, such as Jacksonville losing both of their road games by one point and their only win coming at home in week one, 16-10, over Tampa Bay.

Atlanta has struggled to a 1-2 mark, scored only 40 points in three games and generally speaking is not very deep. In this battle of potential cellar-dwellers, the Jags have an edge.

Prediction: Jaguars 21 Falcons 14

Detroit at Buffalo (-4 1/2, 41) 7:00 pm - Anybody who's seen Buffalo's preseason games knows where this team is heading this season, to the bottom of the AFC East. while their first string offense isn't exactly horrible - though close - the backups have been nothing short of goofy.

All of Detroit's preseason games have been decided by one point, and the Lions have won two of them, in identical scores of 13-12 over Cleveland and Jacksonville, both at home.

If the trend stays in place, the Lions will win a close call. Generous points. Not much defense... or offense.

Prediction: Lions 17 Bills 16

Indianapolis at Cincinnati (-3, 41 1/2) 7:00 pm - The Colts may actually be better off, at this point, without Andrew Luck. He's been pressing and it shows in the Colts' 0-3 showing thus far.

The Bengals have been doing everything right offensively, but the defense has given up 79 points, far too much for a unit that was one of the best in the league last season. Chance for some backups to make their case, but the Colts have lots of receivers battling for positions, so they'll get their chances with Matt Hasselbeck and Chandler Harnish chucking balls their way.

Prediction: Colts 27 Bengals 21

NY Jets at Philadelphia (-2 1/2, 44) 7:00 pm - The Eagles have allowed a league-high 97 points through week three of the preseason and that's not anything to be proud of, especially considering that the Jets will likely be starting Philly's cast-off QB, Mike Vick, who may be looking to prove a point.

For Philly, their starter, Mark Sanchez, was thrown under the bus by the Jets, so call this a swap game. Matt Barkley will also get plenty of playing time for the Eagles, but their defense will, as usual, allow too many easy scores.

Prediction: Jets 34 Eagles 28

St. Louis at Miami (-3, 39) 7:00 pm - Just in case nobody's been noticing, it should be pointed out that the Rams are probably pretty good, though they'll be without the services of QB Sam Bradshaw, again, as the injury-prone QB suffered a torn ACL last week and will be out for the season.

Shaun Hill was going to start this game for the Rams, anyway, so he'll be ready, but the Dolphins have a not-so-secret weapon in Matt Moore, who has plenty of experience and will move the ball steadily against the Rams' second and third defensive units.

Prediction: Dolphins 24 Rams 17

Kansas City at Green Bay (-3, 42) 7:00 pm - 1-2 Kansas City has allowed 97 points through three games, tied with the Eagles for the most in the league, so there are some backups who will be looking to make positive impressions against the 2-1 Packers, who will play Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien extensively at QB.

While neither of those guys are household names, they aren't too bad, but KC's Chase Daniel is very mobile and will cause the Packer secondary fits. This could be a fun game to watch, especially if it's as close as expected.

The game could rest on the foot of Kansas City kicker, Ryan Succop, who's been a consistent sort and should be able to bang home a game-winner.

Prediction: Chiefs 30 Packers 27

Carolina at Pittsburgh (-5 1/2, 38 1/2) 7:30 pm - This line is large for a reason and it's probably because the Steelers are good at home, regardless of who's playing for them. Their sole win in preseason was two weeks ago, in a 19-16 defeat of Buffalo.

Carolina was bombed at New England last week, 30-7, and don't seem to have much of an offense without Cam Newton running the show. Derek Anderson will be behind center this week for the Panthers, and that's enough of a reason to take the Steelers, big.

Prediction: Steelers 31 Panthers 10

New England at NY Giants (-3, 41) 7:30 pm - This could be somewhat of a grudge match for two northeastern teams, despite their playing in different divisions and conferences. The hatred goes deep, beyond the starters, so expect some degree of pushing and shoving, and, yes, lots and lots of penalties, which seems to be the norm this preseason.

The Giants are 4-0 in games that don't count, but the 2-1 Patriots will change that, though the scoring will be at a minimum without Eli Manning or Tom Brady.

Prediction: Patriots 20 Giants 14

Washington at Tampa Bay (-3, 38 1/2) 7:30 pm - If this were a regular season game, the Redskins would be favored, despite being on the road. Even here, there's quite a disparity in the talent department, and Redskin head coach Jay Gruden is still looking to see who's going to be on the roster after the final cut-down.

2-1 Washington will have experience at QB with Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, whereas the Bucs go with Mike and Mike, Glennon and Kafka. Nothing strange about this final trial run. Washington wins.

Prediction: Redskins 24 Buccaneers 17
