Today's Word Is Halliburton Judy Stillson | 9/20/05
Well, if you live in the Gulf Coast area recently affected by hurricane Katrina, you need to know what Halliburton is, because you'll be seeing quite a bit of them in the near future and for quite a while.
First, a quiz.
Which of these most accurately describes Haliburton?
A. A boutique hotel and inn located in Halifax, Canada.
B. A region in Northern Ontario, Canada, mostly wild and free from pollution.
C. One of the world's largest providers of products and services to the oil and gas industries. A company that adds value through the entire lifecycle of oil and gas reservoirs.
D. A giant, nineteen-headed monster that claws through dirt and earth seeking riches underneath the crust of the planet. Cannot be stopped by conventional means.
The absolutely correct answer is C. Although B is close but the spelling is a little off. See here.
Additionally, answer A could work, but that would be The Halliburton.
And D could be an apt description if you live in Iraq.
Today, we're going to focus on answer C because that's what it says on their web site. The company, from which VP Dick Cheney still receives a stipend (he's a former CEO). Halliburton was one company to receive a contract for relief work in the Gulf States area - actually, they were the first, and they're set to receive many, many more contracts paid for with YOUR TAX DOLLARS!
It's refreshing to know that the Vice President can enrich himself and his buddies at our expense, isn't it? He's been doing it for nearly five years while in office and Halliburton has been getting fat government no-bid contracts for many years.
In the Gulf region, Halliburton will likely be granted $80-100 billion in reconstruction contracts.
Just today it was reported that more than 700,000 small businesses have applied to the Small Business Administration (SBA) for loans to restart businesses or begin new ventures in the region. The SBA has approved none of them.
Halliburton already has contracts in place. Soon the money will be in their hands. And so will your security and your faith in America as a free and honest nation.
Another quiz: Tomorrow's word will be: A. Cronyism, B. Fascism, C. Slavery, D. Corruption.
