--- Week 10 Notes below ---

In Focus: Three key games from week 10

1. West Virginia at Louisville: This was the game many were touting as the approach to the national championship. The winner would play the winner of Ohio State vs. Michigan for all the marbles in January. Sorry to say, it didn't turn out that way. Louisville was the happy recipient of 3 Mountaineer fumbles and won 44-34, but they lost the gross yardage battle and nobody is going to be impressed with allowing over 500 yards and 34 points. Quarterback Brian Brohm was poised and cool and he'll make a great pro, but the jury's still out on Louisville. They still have to beat undefeated Rutgers this week and put up some big numbers against their remaining foes, South Florida, Pittsburgh and Connecticut. The Bulls and Panthers are capable of pulling off the upset, so this is no done deal, even though the Cardinals moved into the #3 spot on the BCS poll behind Ohio State and Michigan, one of whom will suffer a loss on November 18, when those two meet in their regular season finale.

2. Oklahoma at Texas A&M: The Sooners escaped with a 17-16 win as QB Paul Thompson completed only 3 of 12 passes for 39 yards. The Aggies didn't fare much better, amassing only 63 passing yards, but outgaining Oklahoma, 315-283. The Sooners are now 7-2, with one of those losses a contestable 34-33 decision at Oregon. A&M is 8-2, with their only other loss to Texas Tech, a 31-27 decision back in September. While the Aggies have only slim hopes to play in the Big 12 championship, they can play spoiler as their last two games are against Nebraska and Texas.

3. LSU at Tennessee: Though the LSU Tigers entered this game with two losses, they ended up being the best team on the field despite 3 interceptions thrown by QB JaMarcus Russell. The Tigers outgained the Vols 506 to 265, yet still needed an 80-yard, 4th quarter drive for a TD to steal away with the 28-24 win. LSU has virtually no chance to advance to the SEC championship as they have already lost to both Auburn and Florida, though they could damage the Razorbacks in the last game of the regular season at Arkansas.

In analyzing the teams that could match up with either Ohio State or Michigan (and the Buckeyes still look like the better of those two), Florida, Arkansas and Cal actually seem to be the hottest right now, but Arkansas lost badly in their opener against USC and fields a freshman quarterback while Cal lost their season opener to Tennessee. Both of these squads are vastly improved since early September and should be given consideration. Florida may the only team capable of beating Ohio State in a national championship setting, but their loss at Auburn hurts their chances. That leaves Louisville and Rutgers, and Rutgers won't get a shot even if they upset the Cardinals this week. Louisville has the weapons on offense, but their defense is porous. Ohio State has a clear path to the national championship over what are, in reality, a bunch of flawed teams behind them.
