NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 12
Rick Gagliano | 11/20/06
Through games of November 18
--- Week 12 Notes below ---
After the Ohio State Buckeyes took care of business on Saturday, defeating Michigan, 42-39, the scramble was on to find a replacement for the Wolverines in the #2 slot.
Some will argue - rightfully so - that Michigan deserves another shot at the Buckeyes on a neutral site and according to the current BCS data, unless USC or Florida finishes with a real flourish, the Wolverines will play Ohio State for the national championship.
That may seem a foregone conclusion to many, but the BCS is a horrible system and giving Michigan a second shot simply is not fair to any number of teams, especially USC, Florida and Boise State.
Of the three, USC has the roughest road, Florida the most work to do. They play Notre Dame this Saturday and face arch-rival UCLA on December 2nd. Florida has a date this weekend at Florida State and then will play for the SEC Championship on December 2nd.
Boise State, now the only other undefeated team in the country and not being given any serious consideration, plays Nevada this Saturday to close out their regular season. The Broncos deserve a shot at the national championship but the BCS simply will not allow it because they play in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and it is not considered an "elite" conference like the Big 10, Big 12, Big East, PAC-10, ACC and SEC.
It's unfortunate, because anybody who's seen the Broncos knows they are a quality team capable of big efforts and big plays on both sides of the ball.
There's still some football to be played, but right now, it looks like it may just end up being Ohio State vs. Michigan. The options of either Florida or USC are intriguing, but no matter who the Buckeyes face, expect them to be at least 8 point underdogs.
When the season ends on January 9, there's sure to be more calls than ever for a playoff system or a system that doesn't merely pick the top two teams based on polls and computer rankings. The time for a real, final and reliable way of determining a national championship in college football is long overdue.
