NCAA College Football Top 25 - Week 2
Rick Gagliano | 9/11/06
Through games of Sept. 9
--- Week 1 Notes below ---
Texas was totally outplayed in every aspect of the game against Ohio State and consequently were dumped to the #12 spot in this week's rankings. Even that may have been generous as the Longhorns have a tough schedule ahead, though not immediately. They have time to fix what's broken, and mostly that's their defense of which Ohio State took full advantage Saturday night. Add to that the expected struggles of redshirt freshman QB, Colt McCoy, and you have a set-up for a late-season plunge.
The Longhorns have it easy the next three weeks, at Rice, and then home against Iowa St. and Sam Houston State. After that, it gets a little trickier - on October 7, 21 and 28 they are at Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas Tech. If they get through those games unscathed, they still have solid Oklahoma State and Texas A & M to play. The Longhorns could be looking at 3 or 4 losses before the regular season is over and the distinct possibility of not making the Big 12 championship game. Longhorn loyalists are just now beginning to understand how special Vince Young was for their team.
Along those same lines, USC may have some trouble getting through the PAC-10 without faltering. UCLA, Oregon, Cal and Arizona State all field quality squads, but we're leaving them in the #5 spot for now. The Trojans have a very big game against Nebraska this weekend. The Cornhuskers are very much improved, so that game may give and indication of USC's prowess.
Auburn, meanwhile, retained the top spot, blanking Mississippi State, 34-0. The Tigers look like a machine as they head into serious SEC competition, which is loaded. Georgia, LSU and Florida all have legitimate arguments for their high rankings. Tennessee narrowly escaped losing to Air Force after thumping Cal in Week 1, so they seem vulnerable. Alabama got by Vandy by 3 and were relieved of their Top 25 standing.
Also not making solid showings in Week 2 were Florida State, Penn State (they're out of the Top 25, and probably will stay out the rest of the season) and Northwestern (lost to New Hampshire), while Louisville, LSU and Boise State played some of the most impressive football so far this season. Georgia also looked very solid, shutting out South Carolina on the road.
Beware the Big East! In addition to West Virginia and Louisville, South Florida and Pitt also have good teams and don't forget the upstarts from UConn. The program is in its 4th season and they could be any kind, though they are likely to be very good and bowl eligible this season. Syracuse almost knocked off heavily-favored Iowa, though the Hawkeyes were without QB Drew Tate. He had an abdominal sprain and should be back this week for the annual grudge match with Iowa State.
