NCAA Week 6 Notes

How Good are the Gators?

Florida took complete charge over the LSU Tigers on Saturday, delivering a smashing 23-10 win on the Gators' home field, the "Swamp." With the dynamic QB combo of Chris Leak and Tim Tibow, the game-planning of Urban Meyer and his coaching staff, and a defense that now ranks #2 in points allowed (9.5) and #13 in total yardage allowed (259.7 per game). Having beaten Alabama and LSU in back-to-back weeks at home, the Gators take to the road this weekend to face Auburn, who suffered a rare 27-10 thumping at home by Arkansas.

Auburn just never got into the game and the aggressive Razorbacks just plain outplayed them. The Tigers looked very ordinary and dull, and thus dropped from #1 to #10. Having to rebound against this Florida squad is going to be difficult, but not impossible. The SEC clearly looks like the best conference in America, with 5 teams ranked in our Top 25 and Arkansas (leading the West division at 3-0) just outside.

Buckeyes and Wolverines Tops in Big 10

Ohio State and Michigan continued to roll. The Buckeyes pounded overmatched Bowling Green, 35-7, while Michigan won their 3rd straight conference game with a lopsided 31-13 home win over in-state rival Michigan State. The Wolverines could be ranked #1 just as easily as Ohio State, Florida, Louisville or West Virginia, as they also have a win over Notre Dame and none of their games have been close. Their date with destiny is November 18, when they conclude their season at Ohio State.

Cal or USC?

While the USC Trojans are still ranked higher than the Cal Bears, they haven't lived up to the billing, winning their last two games by identical 6-point margins over Washington and Washington State. Meanwhile, Cal has been unstoppable on offense and, judging by how they handled the Oregon Ducks in their 45-17 win, may have the best defense in the PAC-10. While the Bears are allowing an average of 21 points per game, the defense seems more than capable of getting the job done against anyone in the West.

USC's schedule down the stretch is daunting, having consecutive home games against Oregon, Cal and Notre Dame, before closing the season at UCLA. Winning all four of those games would likely get the Trojans into a championship game, though it's a feat not many think can be accomplished.

No Peace in the East

Overlooked by most college football pundits is the resurgence in the Big East, as Louisville, West Virginia and Rutgers are all 5-0, and Pitt is a solid 4-1. The Mountaineers and Cardinals are set for a showdown on November 7 at Louisville in which both teams are expected to enter the game at 7-0. West Va. plays Syracuse and Connecticut in the interim, while the Cardinals take on Cincinnati and the Orangemen before the expected big game. Lurking in the wings is Rutgers, who plays Louisville the following week, but has away games at Navy and Pittsburgh on October 14 and 21.

Surprises

Speaking of Navy, the Middies traveled out west and beat up on the Air Force, grounding the Falcons 24-17. Navy is now 5-1, and, after the Rutgers game, will get a week off before hosting Notre Dame in what is beginning to shape up as a major contest for bowl positioning. Should Navy get through both Rutgers and Notre Dame, they may pose a problem for the BCS, as their only loss was by a point in overtime to Tulsa.

And the biggest surprise of the season has to be the 6-0 Missouri Tigers who put a 38-21 whipping on favored Texas Tech on Saturday. The Mizzou are on a roll and travel to Texas A & M this weekend. With the Big 12 North pretty much up for grabs, the Mizzou have to keep winning up until their game at Nebraska on November 4. A win there would likely put them in the conference championship game and a shot at a BCS berth.
