Quick Notes on Close Calls

This was the first week this season that the Top 10 did not change, as all teams won or, as in the case of USC, were idle.

Saturday saw a couple of close calls, but none closer than in the Texas-Nebraska game. With a little more than a minute and a half left to play, and the Longhorns on the short end of a 20-19 score, Nebraska tossed a short pass that looked to have earned the Cornhuskers a first down. But the ball popped loose on the tackle and was recovered by Texas. The offense took over and drove from near mid-field to about the 5 yard line and kicked the game-winning field goal with 27 seconds left.

Notre Dame scored on their final possession after UCLA, which had kept the Irish offense in check all day, failed to convert a critical third down and punted to Notre Dame. Brady Quinn hooked up with Jeff Samardzija who zigged and zagged down the sideline for a 45-yard TD with less than 30 seconds remaining. The Irish pulled off the 20-17 win in the most dramatic finale of the season.

The Cal Bears had to go into overtime to beat Washington State, 31-24, and extend their winning streak to 7 games after losing their opener in Tennessee. Cal currently is atop the PAC-10 standings at 5-0, with a 1/2 game lead on Southern Cal.

Every team usually has close calls in the course of a season. That's what makes championship-caliber teams special. They find ways to win when all seems lost. That kind of stick-with-it attitude was never more apparent than on this weekend just past.
