About the Top 25
Downtown Magazine's NCAA College Football Top 25 is not a poll like AP or USA Today/Coach's polls, or a computer generated rating system like the BCS, but an objective ranking system based on visual and statistical observations of college football teams in Division 1-A.
The rankings, published weekly - usually on Monday - are representative of what our expert editors believe to be the best teams in college football respective of conference play and strength of schedule leading up to the traditional bowl games. Downtown Magazine strives to present the Top 25 in a manner that is objective, non-political and respectful of the standards of NCAA football.

USC, Texas top Week 1 Rankings in Downtown Magazine's College Football Top 25
Rick Gagliano | 9/7/05
Coming off impressive, lopsided wins in their season openers, the USC Trojans and Texas Longhorns took the top two spots in week 1 of Downtown Magazine's College Football Top 25 rankings.
The Trojans, last season's national champion, blew by Hawaii by a 63-17 score while Texas dominated overmatched University of Louisiana-Lafayette, 60-3.
USC notched its 23rd straight win as last year's Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns. Reggie Bush rushed for 86 yards on 12 carries and caught 4 passes for 48 yards. Bush scored on runs of 41 and 1 yards while Steve Smith hauled in 7 passes for 185 yards and 1 TD. Wideout Dwayne Jarrett also had 7 receptions and notched three TDs.
The Longhorns were led by Heisman hopeful quarterback Vince Young, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. The Longhorn defense stymied the Ragin' Cajuns, holding them to just 73 yards rushing and 236 yards of total offense.
Rounding out the Top Five are Iowa at #3, Georgia at #4 and Ohio State in the #5 spot.
Perennial underdogs to Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten, the Iowa Hawkeyes made an early statement with a 56-0 conquest at Ball State. the Iowa defense held Ball State to 51 yards rushing and 93 yards passing, while Hawkeye quarterback Drew Tate threw for 99 yards and 2 TDs on 9 of 10 passing.
The heart of the Hawkeye attack was the running game, as 8 different backs rushed for 246 yards and five touchdowns. Shonn Green led all rushers with 116 yards and one score on 18 carries.
In Athens, the Georgia Bulldogs left no doubt about their chances in the SEC as they easily overpowered well-regarded Boise State, 48-13. Quarterback D. J. Shockley was rewarded for his patience as the back up to David Greene for the past three years, throwing for five touchdowns and running for another in his first start. Shockley was impressive, clicking on 16 of 24 throws for 289 yards without an interception or sack. His touchdown throws were 5, 20, 31, 40 and 56 yards.
#5 Ohio State appeared solid on both sides of the ball in winning their home opener, 34-14 over Miami of Ohio. Justin Zwick was 17 of 25 passing for 155 yards and 1 score, throwing mostly to wideouts Santonio Holmes and Ted Ginn Jr. Ginn had five grabs for 75 yards, while Holmes had an equal number for 74 yards. Both receivers caught a touchdown pass.
The #6 through 10 positions in the Top 25 were filled by Florida, Michigan, Arizona State, Virginia Tech and Tennessee.
Teams which have yet to play but were worthy of Top 25 ranking are LSU (13), Purdue (14), Fresno State (21) and Texas Tech (25). Two teams, Texas A & M and Miami, 22 and 23 respectively, were the only teams with losses to rank.
