About the Top 25
Downtown Magazine's NCAA College Football Top 25 is not a poll like AP or USA Today/Coach's polls, or a computer generated rating system like the BCS, but an objective ranking system based on visual and statistical observations of college football teams in Division 1-A.
The rankings, published weekly - usually on Monday - are representative of what our expert editors believe to be the best teams in college football respective of conference play and strength of schedule leading up to the traditional bowl games. Downtown Magazine strives to present the Top 25 in a manner that is objective, non-political and respectful of the standards of NCAA football. |
Alabama falls again; Maimi stung by Yellow Jackets; USC Survives
Late season losses are taking their toll on the Top 25. In the past two weeks, both Alabama and Miami have had their season's hopes dashed and fallen through the rankings.
No team has suffered worse than the Alabama Crimson Tide, who, after running up an impressive 9-0 record, dropped their final two regular season games, knocking them out of the SEC Championship game and BCS bowl bids.
The Tide's demise was its woeful lack of offense, which was evident since the Florida game, when Alabama lost of receiver-returner Tyrone Prothro for the season. Alabama's defense kept them winning until they lost in overtime to LSU and then fell to a motivated Auburn team in the annual Iron Bowl. The Tide fell from #5 all the way down to #18 in just two weeks time.
The Miami Hurricanes were the other Top 10 casualty this week, when they were stung by the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 14-10. The 'Canes, like Alabama, are a team with a great defense and an adequate offense. After knocking off Virginia Tech, Miami seemed to have a lock on the ACC title game, but fell in their final regular season game, giving them 2 losses in the conference. Their first loss came in their opener to Florida State back in September.
With the Texas Longhorns idle, USC had to step it up to hold down their #2 ranking, barely getting by the Fresno State Bulldogs, 50-42, to remain, along with the Longhorns, the only undefeated team in the nation. The Trojans face 9-1 UCLA on December 3rd to closeout both teams' regular seasons and decide the PAC 10.
The Top 10 now is constructed as follows: Texas, USC, LSU, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, West Virginia, UCLA and Auburn.
