Texas Survives, Iowa State, Notre Dame Surprise in Downtown Magazine's College Football Top 25
Rick Gagliano | 9/12/05

Week 2 of the college football season was chock full of hot games and heated rivalries and the games certainly did not disappoint.

In what may be considered the best contest thus far, quarterback Vince Young led the Texas Longhorns into hostile territory - the Horseshoe at Ohio State - and came away with a gutsy, impressive road win. In the 25-22 come from behind victory, Young was just short of spectacular, keeping the Longhorns in the game until finally winning it late with a 24 yard touchdown pass to Limas Sweed.

The score and ensuing extra point put the Longhorns ahead 23-22. They added a safety a few moments later to seal the win. Young finished 18-29 passing for 270 yards with 2 TDs and 2 INTs.

The Longhorns are now set up to run the table in the Big 12 South. Next week they play patsy Rice, then they head to defenseless Missouri on October 1. After that, the only meaningful games are at home vs. Oklahoma and Texas Tech, and a season ending road game at Texas A & M prior to a likely appearance in the Big 12 Championship game.

If they can get through the schedule unscathed, Texas troops could find themselves in the Rose Bowl in January. Of course, it's only September and there's plenty of football to be played, but a win over a Top 10 team goes a long way toward national championship aspirations.

For Ohio State, the loss may not have been so devastating, considering that the main competition in the Big 10 - Michigan and Iowa - suffered defeats on Saturday. Michigan lost to Notre Dame, 17-10 while the Hawkeyes were slugged by in-state rival Iowa State, 23-3.

After viewing the carnage, neither Iowa nor Michigan look like national contenders. Ohio State is on both of their schedules and the Buckeyes look clearly superior to both of them.

With the three Big 10 losses, the door opened up for Purdue, who only has Iowa on their Big 10 slate, October 8, at home. The Boilermakers also play Notre Dame at home, October 1. Purdue has a solid defense and the opportunity to go undefeated.

In one of the most impressive performances of the weekend, the Iowa State Cyclones overwhelmed Iowa, scoring a 23-3 win at home. Now 2-0, the Cyclones appear to be the favorite to win the Big 12 North. Their win put them in the Top 25, making an appearance at #15 this week.

The SEC is still unsettled, with four teams in the Top 10. Georgia, LSU and Florida all won, while Tennessee was idle. In the ACC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida State and Georgia Tech all won and remain ranked. Boston College and West Virginia also remained undefeated, though unranked.

Boston College is at home against Florida State this weekend (Sept. 17), as is Georgia Tech, who plays undefeated and unscored-upon Connecticut. The Huskies beat Buffalo 38-0 on 9/3 and swamped Liberty 59-0, 9/10. UConn could surprise and shake up the lower echelons of the rankings this weekend.

USC was idle, and remains #1. Rounding out the Top 10 are Texas (2-0), Virginia Tech (2-0), Georgia (2-0), Florida (2-0), California (2-0), Ohio State (1-1), LSU (1-0), Tennessee (1-0), Louisville (1-0).
