About the Top 25
Downtown Magazine's NCAA College Football Top 25 is not a poll like AP or USA Today/Coach's polls, or a computer generated rating system like the BCS, but an objective ranking system based on visual and statistical observations of college football teams in Division 1-A.
The rankings, published weekly - usually on Monday - are representative of what our expert editors believe to be the best teams in college football respective of conference play and strength of schedule leading up to the traditional bowl games. Downtown Magazine strives to present the Top 25 in a manner that is objective, non-political and respectful of the standards of NCAA football. |
Top five unchanged in College Football Rankings as Texas, USC, Virginia Tech all win big
The college football world took a bit of a breather this past weekend as the top three teams ran up big scores, solidifying their positions. While Texas and USC romped, the Longhorns 52-17 win over previously-undefeated Texas Tech was perhaps the most impressive. Tech's offense was rated #1 in the nation, but was submerged by the stout Texas defense, holding them to a score 35 points below their season average. While the Red Raiders still managed over 500 yards net offense, they could only penetrate the end zone twice.
The Longhorns demonstrated once again just how far superior they are to any of the teams in the Big 12 as they improved to 7-0. Quarterback Vince Young, despite two early interceptions, hit on 12 of 22 passes, two for touchdowns and 239 yards. Young also ran 7 times for 45 yards. Complementing Young were backs Selvin Young and freshman Jamaal Charles, who combined for another 116 yards rushing on 23 carries.
USC didn't miss a beat in their 51-24 rout of Washington State. Quarterback Matt Leinart, who threw 4 TD passes, was 20 of 26 overall for 201 yards. Heisman hopeful Reggie Bush had his usual efficient day, carrying the ball 8 times for 51 yards and returning a punt 84 yards for a touchdown.
The Virginia Tech Hokies got a head start on the competition by downing Maryland on Thursday night, 28-9. Marcus Vick, in his own a Heisman Trophy candidate, completed 14 of 23 passes for 211 yards, but was picked off three times. He more than made up for his miscues by rushing for 133 yards and a score on 16 carries. The Hokie defense was in top form, holding the Terrapins to 288 total offense, one field goal and a late touchdown after the outcome had already been decided.
After the big three there were struggles. #4 Georgia held on for a 23-20 win over Arkansas after quarterback DJ Shockley was forced to sit out the second half with a badly sprained knee. Shockley, the key to Georgia's offense, is questionable for next week's important SEC game at Florida. If he is unable to go, the Bulldogs quest for the SEC title and possible national championship could be dashed.
Alabama improved to 7-0 with a gritty 6-3 win over rival Tennessee. The Tide, for the second week in a row, got a last second field goal from kicker Jamie Christensen. Alabama remained at #5. Miami, ranked #6, also stayed in place after dispatching overmatched Temple, 34-3.
The rest of the top ten moved up a notch with the demise of Texas Tech. UCLA, Boston College, LSU and Florida State, all winners on Saturday, occupied the 8th through 10th spots.
Five teams - Missouri, TCU, Northwestern, Fresno State and UTEP - reached the Top 25 after being unranked last week. Auburn, Tennessee, Michigan State, Nebraska and Virginia all fell out while suffering losses.
