About the Top 25

Downtown Magazine's NCAA College Football Top 25 is not a poll like AP or USA Today/Coach's polls, or a computer generated rating system like the BCS, but an objective ranking system based on visual and statistical observations of college football teams in Division 1-A.

The rankings, published weekly - usually on Monday - are representative of what our expert editors believe to be the best teams in college football respective of conference play and strength of schedule leading up to the traditional bowl games. Downtown Magazine strives to present the Top 25 in a manner that is objective, non-political and respectful of the standards of NCAA football.

Georgia bounced from Top 10 after loss to Florida in Downtown Magazine's College Football Top 25
Rick Gagliano | 10/31/05

With the last games of October now in the books, the college football season becomes contentious for teams vying for post-season bowls and BCS rankings.

The biggest game of the weekend - at least the one with the most impact - was the annual meeting between SEC rivals Florida and Georgia. Playing without regular quarterback D. J. Shockley, the Bulldogs, despite their undefeated record, were a slight underdog according to Las Vegas oddsmakers, and were handed their first loss of the season by the Gators, 14-10, sending them from #4 to #12 in the current Downtown Magazine Top 25, released on Monday.

The top 3 teams - Texas, USC and Virginia Tech - remained unchanged, as they all recorded solid wins on Saturday. Texas, playing on the road, overwhelmed Oklahoma State with a dominant second half, winning 47-28. USC posted an impressive home win over Washington State, 52-13.

The Hokies won their second straight on Thursday night, having beaten the Maryland Terrapins in a prime time Thursday game on October 20, won at home this past Thursday, 30-10 over highly-regarded Boston College, once again displaying the solid defense that have kept their national championship homes alive.

Virginia Tech has its biggest test of the season this coming weekend, a November 5 tilt versus Miami, in Blacksburg, Virginia, the Hokies' home turf. The Hurricanes, whose only loss came in their season opener against Florida State, has reeled off six straight wins since then, and moved into the #4 spot this week, leapfrogging over Alabama, who remained at #5 with a 35-3 win over Utah State. Miami handled North Carolina 34-16.

Rounding out the top 10 are UCLA, LSU, Florida State, Penn State and Ohio State. The Buckeyes became the first team with two losses to crack the top 10 with their 45-31 victory at Minnesota improving their record to 6-2. Ohio State's only losses were by 3 points to Texas and by 7 at Penn State.

Notre Dame, idle this past weekend, ended up just short of the Top 10, at #11 with a 5-2 record. The Irish host the Tennessee Volunteers this weekend in South Bend. The importance of the game was knocked down a peg when the Vols suffered their third consecutive loss and fourth of the season, losing at home to South Carolina, 16-15.

Downtown Magazine's current Top 25 now contains only five unbeatens and twelve teams with a solitary loss. Michigan won at Northwestern 33-17 this weekend and became the only team in the rankings with three losses. The Wolverines checked in at #21. Their three losses were to Notre Dame, 17-10, and by identical 23-20 scores to Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Louisville and Auburn joined Michigan in returning to the Top 25 after short absences.
