Sunday November 12, 2006

4:05 pm Denver (-9.5, 33) at Oakland - One would think that the Raiders have had just about enough of being pushed around by everybody and are ready to take their anger out on a divisional foe.

One would be partially right. The Raiders have won two of their last three, but were shut out by a desperate Seattle team on Monday night. Now they are back home and welcome in the Broncos for a little meet and greet.

This is the second meeting between these two. Denver won the first matchup 13-3 just about a month ago in Denver. Now, the Raiders will get them back. Denver's defense is small, but fast. Look for the Raiders to run, run and run some more in a critical defeat for Denver.

Prediction: Raiders 17 Broncos 14

4:15 pm Dallas (-7, 43) at Arizona - Dallas ran into a very desperate Washington team last week and lost a game they had a legitimate shot at winning. The Cowboys have been playing very good ball since they changed quarterbacks two weeks ago. The defense will completely shut down anything the Cardinals can offer up, especially on the ground.

Arizona has lost the last 7 straight and they don't seem capable of changing their fortune any time soon. Big day for Big D.

Prediction: Cowboys 38 Cardinals 10

4:15 pm New Orleans at Pittsburgh (-4, 45.5) - A tale of two cities. One hosts the reigning Super Bowl champions (2-6). The other is still recovering from a hurricane that occurred over a year ago (6-2). Simply put, the Saints have a better team on the field. Drew Brees is having an MVP season and he's not about to stop. The Steelers have problems in virtually every aspect of the game, but much of it falls on Roethlisberger, who has been inconsistent at best, ineffective at worst.

If ever there was a no brainer, this is it. Saints in a romp.

Prediction: Saints 35 Steelers 17

4:15 pm St. Louis at Seattle (-3, 43.5) - These same two teams tangled just a month ago in St. Louis as the Seahawks pulled out a 30-28 decision. QB Matt Hasselbeck played in that one, RB Shaun Alexander did not. The opposite will be the case here and the backup, Seneca Wallace has done a credible job directing a simplified Seahawk offense. If Alexander is fully healthy, his job gets that much easier and the day gets longer for the Rams' defense.

St. Louis is currently on a three game skid, all against good teams, but nobody promised them a rose garden. This is, after all, professional football, and being ready every week is part of the plan. Sorry to say to the Rams fans, but they aren't going to win this one. Seattle has enough healthy players to begin planning for the post-season and a win here will open up some space in the division.

Prediction: Seahawks 21 Rams 14

8:15 pm Chicago at NY Giants (-2.5, 39) - Well, if the Dolphins can beat the Bears, the Giants should be able to. Right? Maybe. They have a better offense and that may be enough to grab the victory. Naturally, the Bears are likely to play angry and will shut the G-Men down on more than one occasion, but the lack of offense is still a concern in the Windy City.

Both teams rate out fairly equally, though the Bears have an advantage defensively, but the Giants have too many weapons and the Bears are far too inconsistent when they have the ball. They will make the Giants defense look even better than they are, which actually is pretty good.

Yardage will likely be tough to come by for both teams, but mid-range passing and the running of Tiki Barber should provide enough offense for the Giants to take home the win.

Prediction: Giants 21 Bears 16

Monday, November13

8:30 pm Tampa Bay at Carolina (-9.5. 37) - Tampa Bay sure gets no respect in Las Vegas. It's reasonable, though, as they sometimes (make that most of the time) have trouble scoring points and games simply get away from them.

But Carolina doesn't exactly inspire much fear. They're 4-4, have lost their last two and are coming off a bye week. Their largest margin of victory was 8 points, at home against Cleveland. That's not really saying much.

Last season, these divisional foes exchanged wins on each other's fields. If history is any guide, the Buccaneers will hang in tough against the Panthers who have trouble scoring as well. This could easily be the lowest scoring game of the week and if that's the case, Tampa Bay has a shot at winning it. Turnovers could be the key to both who wins and the final score.

Prediction: Buccaneers 17 Carolina 14
