Fearless Rick's 2016 College Football Picks - Week 8 early games

Week 7 Results: Coin: 67-1 Rick: 85-1
Thursday, October 20
7:00 pm Miami (FL) at Virginia Tech (-6, 51) - Hard to believe, but both teams are coming into this game off losses. Last week, the Hurricanes were blown down by North Carolina, 20-13, while the Hokies were humbled at Syracuse of all places, 31-17.
Miami has lost their last two and needs to get back on track, but the Hokies will probably be more comfortable at home and against a team that doesn't go 90 mph on offense such at the Orange. Look for a better offensive effort from Tech and some stout defense late in the game.
Coin Flip: Miami
Prediction: Hokies 30 Hurricanes 17
BYU backs off from nobody, and they've won three straight, the last tow over Michigan State and Mississippi State. The Broncos may prove to be a little out of their league, however.
Coin Flip: Boise State
Prediction: Broncos 27 Cougars 17
7:00 pm South Florida (-6 1/2, 60) at Temple - The first of two big meetings in the American Athletic Conference this weekend pits the Bulls, with the most productive offense in the conference, against the Owls, who are 4-3, but 2-1 in the conference.
Just checking the W-L of both teams points up the fact that all three of Temple's losses have been by seven points or more. 6-1 South Florida has hammered their opposition, the closest any team has come in a Bulls win is 15 points (last week, UConn, 42-27).
Could the Bulls be the class of this conference? This game may tell much.
Coin Flip: South Florida
Prediction: Bulls 38 Owls 21
12:00 pm NC State at Louisville (-19, 65) - Can lightning strike twice? Last week, the Wolfpack had the unenviable chore of playing at Clemson on homecoming weekend. Now, seven days later, they travel to Louisville, to meet the high-flying Cardinals.
NC State missed a field goal with time expiring that would have bested Clemson and eventually lost in OT by a touchdown. They were 17 1/2-point underdogs, similar to this game. Will the Cardinals study up and figure out how to top the Wolfpack, or, will NC State bow up and play even harder against another top=notch foe? The latter seems likely as the NC State defense was equal to the task against Clemson and should be even more inspired this time.
Coin Flip: NC State
Prediction: Wolfpack 34 Cardinals 30
5-2 Iowa can match up with anybody. Home field and maybe a bit of fatigue for the Badgers may propel them to a needed win.
Coin Flip: Wisconsin
Prediction: Hawkeyes 20 Badgers 16
Coin Flip: North Carolina
Prediction: Tar Heels 38 Cavaliers 14
Whether the Cardinal is ready for top-notch PAC-12 opponents will be the story of this game. Surprising Colorado is 5-2 and in position to capture the South division as they're tied at 3-1 in the conference with Utah. The Buffaloes may not stampede Stanford, but they should ramble to a win.
Coin Flip: Stanford
Prediction: Buffaloes 27 Cardinal 24

WEEK 8 NCAA Football Picks
Cumulative: Coin: 42-50-3 Rick: 51-41-3
10:15 pm BYU at Boise State (-7, 57 1/2) - While nobody was looking, the Broncos have rolled to a 6-0 mark (3-0 in the Mountain West) and a #14 ranking. They've had a few close ones, but a look back to September 10, when they beat Washington State, 31-28, may speak volumes about the quality of not just the Broncos, but of the schedule as well.

12:00 pm Wisconsin (-3 1/2, 42) at Iowa - Big Ten match-ups are always interesting and usually produce good contests and this one should be no different. The Badgers nearly pulled off the upset of the season last week, losing to Ohio State, 30-23, in OT. Two weeks prior, they lost at Michigan, 14-7, so there's quality for Wisconsin.
3:00 pm North Carolina (-8 1/2, 68) at Virginia - Even though the Tar Heels are XXX, this looks like a walkover for them. The Cavaliers are 2-4, losing at home to Pitt last week, 45-31. Not much in the way of defense for Virginia and North Carolina can be explosive. Winning at Miami, 20-13, last week may be an indication that the defense is coming around.
3:00 pm Colorado at Stanford (-2, 49) - Stanford may have turned a corner in their comeback win at Notre Dame last week. The offense stayed on the field and the defense actually appeared stout and steady down the stretch in the 17-10 win over the Fighting Irish.
