Fearless Rick's NFL Football Picks - Week 17 early games

Week 16 Results: Coin: 9-7; Rick: 8-8
Sunday, January 1
Baltimore at Cincinnati (-2 1/2, 41), 1:00 pm (CBS) - Nope. Neither of these AFC North teams are going to the playoffs, making predicting the outcome of this game a real puzzler. All things considered, the Ravens should be favored, if owing only to the fact that they have a much better record. Also, the Bengals lost, 19-14, to the Ravens in Baltimore, a little over a month ago, when the game mattered to both teams. Since neither team has improved or devolved much since then, Baltimore by a touchdown should be about right.

WEEK 17 NFL Picks
Cumulative: Coin: 101-117-8; Rick: 109-109-8
Jacksonville at Indianapolis (-4 1/2, 47 1/2), 1:00 pm (CBS) - Both teams have no post-season in front of them, so the big question will be whether or not various starters start and if so, how hard they plan on playing. This could be a fiasco of monumental proportions. Indy QB, Andrew Luck, is likely to get enough snaps to give his squad an edge. Basically, everybody's just guessing here, so we'll go with the coin.
New England (-9, 44 1/2) at Miami, 1:00 pm (CBS) - New England can completely wrap up home field throughout their playoff run, having already clinched a first week bye with a win or a Raiders loss, so there's incentive for them to emerge victorious here. The Dolphins are playing a road game next week no matter the outcome here, thus the heavy favoritism for the Patriots. That makes enough sense to back the team that will, in all likelihood, host the AFC championship game.
Chicago at Minnesota (-5 1/2, 41), 1:00 pm (FOX) - Absolutely no reason to play this game. Probably a good idea to just take the points, since most of the Minnesota players are going to spend the week making vacation plans. AndŠ the coin is in agreement.
Buffalo (-6, 44) at NY Jets, 1:00 pm (CBS) - One of the truly meaningless games of the day, unless you're Bills' head coach Rex Ryan, who was fired prior to game time. After losing in overtime at home to Miami last week, 34-31, Buffalo will miss the playoffs again for the 17th straight season, the longest drought in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Jets have been pretty much a disaster all season. This is a game only fans of hope and change could enjoy. Since it's in NY and the Jets already whipped the Bills up in Orchard Park in week 2, a close encounter is on the table. Take the points and hope the Jets make a few safe landings in the end zone.
Dallas (-4, 43) at Philadelphia, 1:00 pm (FOX) - Dallas has wrapped up the #1 NFC seed and will be hosting for as long as they remain alive in the post-season after a first week bye. The Eagles have not been very good, currently at 6-9, but, with many Cowboy starters likely on the bench for this game, the Eagles will have an opportunity to perform. However, so will the Dallas subs, and they may want to prove some things on the field. The Eagles broke a five-game skid with a 24-19 win over the flattish Giants last Thursday, and they've had plenty of time to rest up for the final game of the seasonŠ for them. Philly may get some satisfaction here. Expect a Tony Romo sighting in the Cowboy backfield.
Cleveland at Pittsburgh (-8, 44 1/2), 1:00 pm (CBS) - Since Cleveland got their one win for the season last week, beating an underperforming Chargers team, 20-17, and the Steelers wrapped up the division with a 31-27 win over Baltimore, there's little reason to believe the Browns will win again in the season finale.
Carolina at Tampa Bay (-4 1/2, 46 1/2), 1:00 pm (FOX) - Still alive in week 16, Tampa Bay needs to win and must get some help from the Giants. The Buccaneers have already surpassed most expectations. Making the playoffs would be a true surprise, but this team has the look of a "next year" squad. Week 5 at Carolina saw the Buccaneers take a 17-14 win, and it is conceivable that they could sweep the disappointing Panthers, but covering the expensive line may be another story. It's a real flyer, this game.
Houston at Tennessee (-2 1/2, 40), 1:00 pm (CBS) - Interesting to see the Titans favored with QB Marcus Mariota out and no chance for Tennessee to make the playoffs. It can only mean that the Texans will be sitting more than just a few of their starters. With the line less than a field goal, Houston seems to be in position for a win.
