Thursday, September 29

Miami at Cincinnati (-7, 44 1/2) 8:25 (NFLN) - Not much good to say about the 1-2 Dolphins, having to go to overtime in order to defeat the Browns last week, 30-24, except that all of their games have been close.

The Bengals, also 1-2, didn't help their cause losing at home to the Broncos, 29-17, after being snuffed by the Steelers in Pittsburgh the previous week, 24-16. Not much offense and it's hurting the defense. Miami has a shot at an upset here.

Coin Flip: Cincinnati

Prediction: Dolphins 23 Bengals 20

Sunday, October 2

Indianapolis (-2 1/2, 49 1/2) vs. Jacksonville at London, 9:30 a.m. (CBS) - This should be a delight for the Brits to watch as neither team has demonstrated any defensive capability to date. A combined 179 points has been allowed by the two, encompassing six games, just a shade under 30 points per outing.

Taking the high side and the 0-3 Jaguars, who are hungry for a win, while the Colts are just plain inept, their 95 points allowed the most in the AFC.

Coin Flip: Indianapolis

Prediction: Jaguars 42 Colts 38

Carolina (-3, 50) at Atlanta, 1:00 pm (FOX) - 2-1 Falcons lit up the Superdome and the Saints, winning 45-32 on Monday night, but the quick turnaround and a meeting with the Panthers may have a chilling effect. Carolina was topped at home by the surprising Vikings last week, 22-10, and that should have served as a wakeup call.

Panthers players may have been a bit too cocky going into the new season after reaching the Super Bowl last year and its high time for an attitude adjustment. No better place than the ATL for that after a 1-2 start.

Coin Flip: Atlanta

Prediction: Panthers 30 Falcons 17

Oakland at Baltimore (-3 1/2, 46 1/2), 1:00 pm (CBS) - Hard to reconcile this line with reality, because the Ravens just barely escaped from Jacksonville last week with a 19-17 win over the Jaguars, who are 0-3. Baltimore's defense has kept them in games, posting a 3-0 mark while allowing 14.7 points per game, fourth in the league.

However, the Raiders are scoring at a nice clip, 26.7 ppg, and they'll test Baltimore's secondary. While Oakland hasn't shown much in the way of defense, they only have to be ordinary for success in their second straight road game.

Coin Flip: Oakland

Prediction: Raiders 27 Ravens 24

Detroit (-3, 46 1/2) at Chicago, 1:00 pm (FOX) - The Lions got far behind the Packers last week but rallied to make the score close in a 34-27 defeat. They are tied for fifth in scoring at 27.0 ppg with the Colts and Patriots and should have no problems against the Bears, who have averaged just 15 points per outing this season while allowing 27.7. Big Ouchie! for Chicago. Go Cubbies!

Coin Flip: Chicago

Prediction: Lions 33 Bears 17

Tennessee at Houston (-6 1/2, 40 1/2), 1:00 pm (CBS) - Houston has had a few extra days to nurse their sore egos after being completely outplayed and outclassed in their Thursday night loss at New England, a humiliating 27-0 defeat against a team starting its third string QB.

If the Texans have any hope of making the playoffs and actually doing something in them, they have to establish more than just JJ Watt. The offense needs to get untracked. They are dead last, at 14 ppg, tied with the Titans, who are 1-2 and have allowed just four more points than Houston. This has all the makings of a major upset.

Coin Flip: Tennessee

Prediction: Titans 24 Texans 20

Buffalo at New England (-4 1/2, 43), 1:00 pm (CBS) - The Bills saved their season by replacing their offensive coordinator and defeating the visiting Cardinals, 33-18, and now must guess to see which QB Bill Belichick will have behind center, or whether he'll use some extreme exotic formations to confuse the Buffalo defense.

While New England has been impressive in winning all three of its starts without Tom Brady, the credit goes to the coaches, the defense and a commitment to excellence. The Pats are tough to beat at Gillette, but the Bills may find the proper formula in a game which should be savored.

Coin Flip: New England

Prediction: Bills 18 Patriots 15

Seattle (-1 1/2, 40 1/2) at NY Jets, 1:00 pm (FOX) - Ryan Fitzpatrick was pathetic in the Jets' loss to the Chiefs last week, throwing for six interceptions in a 24-3 rout. Seattle certainly hasn't impressed anybody until smothering San Fran last week, 37-18, but the trip to the East coast may have a chilling effect on their play this week.

Not to worry, as the Seahawks are allowing a league-low 250.3 yards per game and are second in points allowed behind the Eagles, at 12.3 per game. Lights out for the Jets.

Coin Flip: NY Jets

Prediction: Seahawks 26 Jets 10

Cleveland at Washington (-7 1/2, 45 1/2), 1:00 pm (CBS) - The Browns came as close as a team possibly could without winning, losing in overtime to the Dolphins last week, 30-24. That may be as good as it gets for the pathetic Browns, who may be on their way to a top pick in the Spring draftŠ again.

Washington does wonders with teams that aren't playing well, such as they displayed against the Giants last week, winning ugly, 29-27. This one should not be that close.

Coin Flip: Cleveland

Prediction: Redskins 28 Browns 17
