CFP National Championship
#1 Alabama vs. #3 Georgia (-3, 52) 8:00 pm - Finally, through thousands of college games which began in September of last year, the college football landscape looks pretty like it has the last seven years, or the last 15 years. This season ends up with two SEC teams playing for all the marbles.

The last time that happened was in 2017. The two teams were Alabama and Georgia and the Crimson Tide managed a 26-23 victory and another ring for head coach extraordinaire, Nick Saban.

Following two of the most horrifyingly boring semifinal games from December 31 (Georgia 34, Michigan 11; Alabama 27, Cincinnati 6) the teams that met for the SEC championship a month ago, appear again. Alabama ended Georgia's perfect season with a 41-24 rout.

How the cognoscenti in Las Vegas managed to come up with making Georgia the favorite is mystifying. Alabama ripped through the Bulldog defense like it was Swiss cheese, rolling up 536 yards of offense. Two Georgia turnovers contributed to the Alabama win, despite Georgia leading in time of possession (34:13 to 25:47) and first downs, 30 to 25.

In the end, all that mattered, as Jim Rome likes to say, was SCOREBOARD, and Alabama had that.

Alabama's kids made plays when they mattered and their offense and their schemes proved better than those of the Bulldogs. Georgia's early 10-0 was eviscerated before the middle of the second quarter, but they managed to tie it back up at 17-all before Bryce Young scamped 11 yards just before half time for a 24-17 lead. Young hit Jameson Williams on a 55-yard strike at the start of the third quarter. With a 31-17 lead, the game was already over, even before Jordan Battle's 42-yard pick-6 finished it.

Georgia scored just seven points in the second half. It wasn't all that peachy.

What's disturbing about this set-up is that the College Football Playoffs (CFP) aren't really very interesting. Only four teams are involved and the national championship game - now in it's eighth iteration - has featured only six different teams, Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU and Oregon.

The PAC-12 has been represented only once, and they were hammered by Ohio State, 42-20, in 2015. The Buckeyes have been the only team to represent the Big Ten, twice. Last year they lost to Alabama, 52-24. Along with that, the last three years have been boring blowouts. Clemson ripped Alabama, 44-16, in 2019, and LSU cruised past Clemson, 42-25.

Clemson has been the only representative from the ACC, and they've won two and lost two, having the distinction of beating Alabama twice, in 2016 and 2018.

College football has been dominated by the same teams over the course of the CFP. It's boring. Dull. It makes one question why bother having all those other teams playing all those other games?

This is Alabama's sixth appearance in the CFP National Championship in eight years. Right now, they're 3-2, and both losses were to Clemson. No Clemson this year and they've proven capable of handling the Bulldogs in the past, even as recently as December 4 of last year.

Give Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide three points in a championship game and most people will take that wager all day long.

Coin Flip: Alabama

Prediction: Crimson Tide 38 Bulldogs 20
