NCAA Week 15 Army - Navy

All times Eastern

Saturday, December 11

3:00 pm Army (-7 1/2, 33 1/2) vs. Navy (CBS) - The Black Knights come in a fairly heavy favorite in this annual clash of service academies, and for good reason. They enter the close out of the regular season with an 8-3 mark and will be headed to the Armed Forces Bowl on December 22 to face the Missouri Tigers.

Navy suffered through one of their worst seasons in years. Their 3-8 record will leave them well short of a bowl game, even with a win over their uniformed rivals.

The Black Knights ride a four-game win streak, including two games in which they were underdogs and won outright, a 21-14 win over Air Force on 11/6, and their latest exploit, a solid, 31-16 defeat over a strong team from Liberty.

Army was second in the nation in rushing yards to Air Force, averaging 301.2 yards per outing, while the Middies were seventh overall, at 228.8 per game.

Both teams had success beating the spread this season. Army was 6-5 ATS; Navy was 7-4, which brings into play the potential for the sailors to keep the ground forces on a tight leash.

In their last five games, Navy showed some signs of turning things around, covering the line in four of them, starting with a 27-20 loss to Cincinnati (28-point underdog), then, a 20-17 win over Tulsa (11-point dog). After losing to Notre Dame (#5 in the final rankings), they lost by three to East Carolina as a 3.5-point dog and finished up by walloping Temple, 38-14 as 13.5-point favorites.

If there's one thing the armed services preaches, it's a never give up attitude, and Navy's shown that throughout a season in which they had every reason to quit.

As they prepare for the Army rushing onslaught, Navy defenders will be well-schooled against the Army option offense, as the Navy offense runs similarly.

The same goes for Army, of course, their only losses to Ball State (28-16), Wisconsin (20-14) and Wake Forest (70-56). Most will expect a low-scoring affair, as the O/U line has to be one of the smallest this season (33 1/2).

Unless it's snowing, both teams should manage to find the end zone on multiple trips and kickers may have field days. Army won last season, 15-0, and have emerged victorious in four of the last five meetings. Look for a late score to push the total over as the Knights exert their dominance in the second half.

Coin Flip: Army

Prediction: Army 27 Navy 16
